Teaching & Training

I currently undertake a regular programme of teaching as a visiting lecturer at Sarum College in Salisbury, and at Ripon College, Cuddesdon. I have also taught periodically on the Salisbury Diocesan Continuing Ministerial Development programme.

My principal fields are sacramental and liturgical theology, liturgical practice and ministerial formation.

I also teach and train in a variety of other areas, and am at ease working 1:1, with a small group such as a PCC or a ministry team, or offering seminar and lecture style sessions. My delivery can be very informal, or can utilise liturgical areas within the church or chapel, and I also make use of audiovisual facilities as appropriate. The emphasis in my teaching is on discussion and exploration, drawing on the experience and wisdom of all those present.

The following is a representative example of the sorts of sessions I offer, but do be in touch directly as I am very happy to tailor any training or teaching to the particular circumstances and context.

  • Practical liturgical training for clergy, Readers, lay worship leaders and musicians.

    • A Service of the Word, Morning and Evening Prayer

    • The Eucharist; being the deacon

    • Pastoral Services

    • Initiation

    • Deliverance, evil and the devil (my PhD focus)

    • The Eucharist

    • Sin, confession, atonement, salvation

  • Sessions focussed on reordering, and the use of liturgical space.

  • Disability, health and wholeness.

  • Rural ministry, and worship in multi-parochial benefices (focus of my recent book).

  • Anglican identity (focus of my current research).

  • Preaching.

  • Leading intercessions.

  • Reading scripture in church; fundamentals of the lectionary; lectio divina.
