Tom Clammer OC

Freelance theologian, educator, spiritual accompanier and Anglican Cistercian brother, based in Salisbury.

ABOUT ME

My ministry is based in Salisbury, where I live with my wife and our foolish cat. From 2012 to 2019 I was Canon Precentor at Salisbury Cathedral. I am now focusing on freelance work. I am an ordained priest of the Church of England, with a passion for teaching and training all God's people to flourish in their lives of worship and ministry. My main areas of focus are liturgy and worship, pastoral care, theological exploration, monasticism and developing a ‘rule of life’, and resourcing congregations and communities. Although my ministry is based in Salisbury I work across the country. At present my ministry mostly comprises teaching at two Church of England theological colleges (Sarum College and Ripon College Cuddesdon), and spiritual direction. I am a professed brother of the Anglican Order of Cistercians.

For six months during 2022 I was Acting Succentor at Gloucester Cathedral, assisting during a period of significant staff shortage. I thoroughly enjoyed this short-term project, revisiting some of the skills and tasks that I undertook as a Precentor, and it is always a joy to be in and around Gloucester Cathedral: one of my holy places!

EXPERIENCE

For seven years I was Residentiary Canon and Precentor of Salisbury Cathedral. Before that I was a rural parish priest in the diocese of Gloucester, where I had care of seven village communities and six church buildings. My curacy was a suburban parish in the city of Gloucester, so I have experience of a broad range of Christian communities.

I teach up to MA level regularly, having been a visiting lecturer at several regional theological training colleges. I am a visiting scholar of Sarum College, Salisbury, and an associate tutor at Ripon College, Cuddesdon.

I hold the Bishop's Permission to Officiate in the dioceses of Salisbury and Gloucester. I am an honorary Associate Priest in the parish of Tidenham, in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with which I have had connections for many years. The main photograph on this page is of the church of St Michael and all Angels in the Parish of Tidenham.
